Baylee Nealon: Painting The Desert in Color

Article By: Zak Lodhi

Baylee Nealon’s journey to the Sonoran Desert began in the back seat of a bold heliotrope-colored Plymouth “Woody” station wagon. Her family traveled west from Detroit along Route 66, eventually landing in Tucson, a place locals joked had two suns blazing in the summer sky. At first, she hated it. The desert light felt relentless, washing the color out of everything around her. Crayons left outside melted into waxy puddles under the heat.

But over time, that same landscape revealed its subtle brilliance. Today, Baylee’s Southwestern landscapes burst with color, capturing the desert not as harsh but vibrant and alive.

Her artistic training began locally through Tucson Parks and Recreation programs, then continued with workshops at the Scottsdale Artists’ School and studies under instructor Brenda Seminick. Baylee has since exhibited her work across the United States in numerous juried exhibitions.

For more than a decade, her paintings have been represented through Canyon Ranch Resort and Spa in Tucson.

She was also invited to participate in the prestigious Mountain Oyster Club Art Show and Sale Invitational in both 2011 and 2012, with both pieces selling during the exhibition.
Baylee’s work is known for its energetic color and confident brushwork, often described as a bravura approach to painting. While landscapes remain central to her work, she also explores figurative themes. With sweeping brushwork and bold color, Nealon captures the desert as a living, breathing place. Her paintings invite viewers to experience the Southwest not just as scenery, but as emotion. Her paintings feel both timeless and immediate, grounded in place yet alive with motion.

Now a longtime Tucson resident, Baylee continues to paint with passion, filling her canvases with color, movement, and the unmistakable spirit of the Southwest.
