Southwestern Psychedelia in Watercolor
Ralph Philabaum, known as “Rafa,” is a Tucson-based watercolor artist whose vibrant work blends imagination with the rich cultural influences of the Southwest. His love for drawing began in childhood and continued into his early years, eventually leading him to explore formal art education at Pima Community College. Although art remained a lifelong passion, Ralph spent many years focused on his professional career as a contractor.
He owns and operates Philabaum Professional Painting and P3 Contracting, where his craftsmanship has contributed to numerous projects across Southern Arizona. His skills have also been part of restoration work on Tucson landmarks, including the historic Rialto Theatre and several vintage homes throughout the city.
Ralph’s artistic style, which he describes as “Southwestern Psychedelic,” is instantly recognizable. His colorful compositions often feature whimsical combinations of desert animals and plant life inspired by the flora and fauna of the Sonoran Desert.
Influences from Oaxacan alebrijes, Talavera pottery, and Aztec folklore add layers of symbolism and storytelling to his work. Working primarily in watercolor and ink, Ralph creates each piece entirely by hand. Every drawing is carefully sketched, inked, and painted without digital techniques, giving his artwork a distinctive handcrafted character. His return to the art world has brought a fresh perspective, merging technical precision with playful creativity and bold color.
Ralph’s work has been exhibited at a variety of venues, including Petroglyphs at Mercado San Agustín, The Steinfeld Warehouse Gallery, The Tucson Gallery, Agua Caliente Park, The Phoenix Zoo, Cositas in Tubac, Plaza Fabiola in Puerto Peñasco, Mexico, and the Tucson International Airport.
Through his imaginative scenes and vibrant palette, Rafa continues to celebrate the culture, wildlife, and spirit of the Southwest. artbyrafa.com
