Bree Deverill: The Spirit Beneath the Surface

Artists Jake and Bree posing in a brightly lit photography studio surrounded by a large collection of their stylized bronze wildlife sculptures, including various oversized hares, an elephant, a bear, a moose, and a donkey.

Intuition, imagination, instinct. For Bree Deverill, that’s what art means. Whether working in bronze, ink, or mixed media, Bree creates art that invites viewers to slow down, reconnect with wonder, and discover the spirit beneath the surface. Her work carries a sense of movement that feels both playful and deeply present. It invites the viewer to look closer and feel the story within.

Founded by the late sculptor Chris Deverill, Bree’s studio became known for expressive bronze wildlife sculptures filled with humor, charm, and personality. His work captured more than the likeness of an animal. It captured the spirit. Rabbits, burros, and other creatures seemed to carry their own small stories, playful, soulful, curious, and alive. Over time, that sense of warmth became part of the Deverill name.

And leading that charge is Jake and Bree Deverill, a husband-and-wife creative partnership carrying the family tradition forward while shaping it into something fresh and distinctly their own. Together, they describe this next era as Deverill Studios 2.0, a continuation of the studio’s artistic foundation with a new generation of imagination behind it.

For Jake, the work is deeply personal. As the steward of his father’s celebrated bronze collection, he has taken on the responsibility of preserving Chris Deverill’s original editions and the joy those works continue to bring collectors.

What began as an unexpected responsibility after his father’s passing has become a meaningful act of family, creativity, and stewardship. And for Bree, this next chapter is one of artistic emergence, as she transitions from her earlier work into bronze sculpture, shaping her unique voice. Bree brings that natural voice to her sculptures, with her bronze pieces imbuing three-dimensional form with personality, texture, and storytelling, marking her artistic evolution. Bree is honoring its spirit while introducing a voice that is uniquely her own. And that voice begins with Bixby, Bree’s debut bronze sculpture, sparking curiosity and anticipation for her new artistic voice.

Bree’s debut bronze sculpture is a burro; to her, it was the natural choice. Across Arizona and the greater Southwest, burros are woven into the region’s emotional landscape, from desert trails and historic towns to the rugged terrain of the Grand Canyon and Route 66. Bixby reflects that spirit with oversized ears, a gentle seated posture, and an unmistakable sense of innocence and personality. The sculpture feels approachable and full of heart.

That warmth is central to Bree’s artistic direction. Her work is rooted in wonder, not seriousness. It invites viewers to reconnect with imagination, emotion, and the quiet magic of the natural world. The studio continues to honor the collectible philosophy established by Chris Deverill decades earlier. Bree’s sculptures are produced in small editions, allowing each casting to receive thoughtful attention while preserving the craftsmanship and intimacy collectors value.

Chris Deverill’s original editions also remain available until each edition sells out, with several already sold out entirely. Collectors really do love these whimsical wildlife creations. The Deverill legacy is not standing still. It is evolving gently, playfully, and imaginatively through a second generation and a new artistic voice. With Bree’s emergence as the next sculptor in the Deverill tradition and Jake’s stewardship of the family collection, Deverill Studios is honoring the past while building toward the future. At its heart, the work remains what it has always been: art that sparks joy, imagination, and emotional connection. For Bree, the purpose is beautifully simple. If someone smiles when they see one of the sculptures, then the artwork has done its job.
