Molly Spain\u2019s work feels grounded in the physical world. Metal bends, wood carries its own history, paper shifts between fragility and structure. All of these materials, these fundamental elements of her work, reach out and take hold of something more. Molly\u2019s sculptures and more two-dimensional works are built through a close, patient engagement with material; as we said, there’s something elemental about them. Each piece is reduced to the point where form, weight, and gesture can speak for themselves. And it’s a beauty to behold.<\/span><\/p>

Molly has spent her career exploring the relationship between people and the structures that surround them, both natural and built.<\/span><\/p>

Growing up on a farm in the Midwest gave her an early awareness of land, labor, and the quiet intelligence of handmade things. Years later, while studying at the University of New Mexico, she studied under John Wenger, whose outdoor studio classes placed students directly into the sculptural landscapes of the desert Southwest. That experience deepened Molly\u2019s interest in the way people occupy space and how history can remain embedded in a place long after we move through it.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Before earning her BAFA from the University of New Mexico, she also studied at Iowa State University and the Slade School of Fine Art, University College London. Those different environments became part of the vocabulary of her practice, which continues to move between landscape, memory, travel, and human connection. Her work can be intimate or monumental. Molly has produced commissioned pieces for private and public spaces across the country, adapting her approach to architecture without losing the handmade sensibility that defines her studio work. In 2021, she completed Critical Mass, a mural covering the entire exterior of the five-story Mainframe Studios building in downtown Des Moines. The project transformed an entire structure into an artwork and became a visible landmark within the city. Mainframe Studios was recognized by the Iowa Architectural Foundation in 2025, receiving the Community Enhancement through Historic Revitalization Award.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Yet scale is only one part of Molly\u2019s practice. Some of her most affecting works are rooted in quieter ideas. A series of sculptural staffs began with a story she remembers reading more than 35 years ago.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

In it, members of a community approached conflict through ritual rather than confrontation. One person would carry a staff and walk until their anger had dissolved, then plant it in the earth and return home. The opposing party could later choose to find the staff and bring it back as an act of reconciliation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Whether the story has changed in her memory over the decades is beside the point. What remained was the possibility it offered. For Molly, the staffs became a way to think about what conflict might look like if resolution began internally rather than through argument or force. The staffs are not literal instructions for peace. They are symbols of pause, reflection, and the difficult work of letting something go before returning and reengaging.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

That idea connects naturally to Molly\u2019s broader body of work. Her sculptures often feel like objects that carry evidence of use or ceremony, even though they are contemporary works. There is a sense that they belong to a larger story, one in which the viewer has arrived in the middle. Molly does not separate material from meaning. The way something is cut, joined, balanced, or suspended is part of what the work is saying. Metal can feel severe until it curves. Wood can feel familiar until it is removed from function. Paper can appear delicate, but hold surprising visual weight. Across her practice, Molly seems less interested in giving viewers an answer than in creating conditions for attention. Her work asks us to notice how we move through the world, what we carry with us, and what we might be willing to leave behind. In that sense, the sculptural staffs are one chapter in a much larger conversation. The subject is not simply conflict. It is how people live with one another, how memory becomes structure, and how even the simplest object can become a vessel for change.
