Sally Spear’s ceramics and mixed-media sculptures seem to hold movement inside them. Despite being still themselves, her incredible works pull the eye, playing with negative space and openings to create something marvelous! Even when a piece feels refined and resolved, there is often something elemental beneath the surface, a reminder of where the materials came from and what they have passed through. For Spear, that connection begins with the natural world.<\/span><\/p>

Earth, air, water, and fire are not simply references in her practice; they are part of the process itself. Clay comes from the earth, water creates movement, air changes the surface, and fire permanently transforms. Sally has spent years working within that cycle, allowing it to shape both her materials and the way she thinks about form.<\/span><\/p>

It\u2019s in those intersections of elements that Sally is especially drawn to. Spear has long been drawn to sand and sea, and those influences make their way into her work without becoming literal. The flow of water, the soft erosion of elements over time, the warmth of natural colors. Spear creates pieces that feel contemporary without losing warmth, and sculptural without becoming distant. Negative space, in particular, has become central to her visual language. Rather than treating emptiness as something left over, Spear uses it deliberately. Openings create tension between what is present and what is absent. They allow light to move through a piece, casting shadows that become temporary extensions of the work itself. Seen from different angles, the same sculpture can feel entirely different.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

That sense of transformation continues in Sally’s mixed-media pieces, where ceramic may be paired with reclaimed wood, glass, or steel. Each material carries its own history and physical character, and the relationships between them become part of the meaning. For Spear, combining materials can suggest connection and the passage of time. Sally often stacks, balances, and separates these elements, using space between them as carefully as the objects themselves. And it’s incredible to see. A feeling of connection might be expressed through two forms leaning toward one another. Time may appear through a contrast between new and reclaimed material.<\/span><\/p>

Spear works primarily with mid-fire porcelain and stoneware, producing both functional ceramics and sculptural pieces. The distinction between the two is not always as clear as it might seem. A functional object can still become an exploration of proportion, touch and surface, while her sculptures often retain the intimacy of something made by hand. That relationship between making and sharing has also shaped Sally’s life outside the studio. She has been teaching creative arts for more than twenty years, beginning after earning her BA in Integrative Arts with a focus in ceramics from Pennsylvania State University. Since then, she has taught in schools, community centers, art programs, and studio settings.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Today, Spear works full-time as an artist and creative teacher in Boulder. The integration of being a working artist and teacher is rooted in curiosity and in the belief that creativity becomes more meaningful when people are given room to explore without needing to know exactly where they are going.<\/span><\/p>

That same openness runs through her art. Sally’s work does not demand a single interpretation. It invites attention instead. A shadow appears, a surface catches the light, an opening changes the way a form is understood. And for a moment, what seems solid begins to flow.<\/span><\/p>
